PLANE AND PILLOW, 2024

1000w x 700d x 700h

Tasmanian Myrtle, Recycled Polyester

As a somewhat contemporary throne, this armchair is intended to reconsider ideas of comfort, push construction and challenge expected proportions. It reflects a commitment to slow design and thoughtful sustainability, using reclaimed Tasmanian myrtle to its limits and adopting recycled polyester upholstery* for its durability.

Conceptually, the design is manifested in contradicting ideas. Functional, yet playful. Svelte in figure, yet slouchy in nature. Minimal in construction, yet overly generous in comfort. Technically a bench, yet as relaxed as a couch. Practically, the work is defined by a minimal framework and a continuous arm-to-backrest plane that work together to contain two oversized cushions - a dynamic affording multiple approaches to comfort. Sit as expected with your arms to your side and legs on the ground, edge forward and slouch, sit cross legged on the wide base, or, even better, lounge with your legs draped over one side.

Reclaimed Oregon Balusters

Side table

Stool, Occasional chair, Drinks table, Tall Coaster

Designed as a set of two complimenting yet unique side tables. Their proportion and configuration was informed by the stock dimensions of reclaimed balusters from a ship.

The sculptural form of the contained chamfers articulates the side tables, changing across each face, comfortably exposing the naturally strong and directional grain.

These sides tables were completed in 10 weeks, but it was intentionally designed for efficiency, enabling a faster turnaround for future production if required.
